Mayhem Dance Successful
- - By Dorcas Hand and Julia Land
On May 11, the Houston Area Traditional Dance Society held an extravaganza
called Mayhem. Mayhem featured two dances, a potluck dinner,
and board elections. It was held at a new location, the Central Presbyterian
Fellowship Hall.
The first dance, in the afternoon, was for experienced dancers. Caller
Chris Bischoff, from Taylorsville, Kentucky, did a great job challenging
the dancers. He called a mix of advanced dances and medleys that kept
everyone on their toes. The second dance, in the evening, was for all
dancers and quite a few dancers attended for the the first time. Once
again, Chris Bischoff did a great job, this time teaching the many new
dancers.
Music at both dances was provided by Chris Peterson, Roy Wilhite, and
Gary Graves. These musicians are 2/3 of Armadillo on the Halfshell and
3/4 of Duck Ruckus, both bands of note from Austin whose membership overlaps.
Their musical energy and enthusiasm kept everyone moving.
The pot luck dinner was memorable and fun. More than 100 members and
guests danced at Mayhem. We need to schedule more special events.
Behind the scenes
Any event like that takes lots of people behind the scenes. The following
individuals are among the many who deserve thanks.
Denise Farrell for helping us find and make use of the Central Presbyterian
Fellowship Hall.
Cheryl Cleary and Roy Simmons for managing the snacks.
Roy Simmons for helping with the floor and table setup, and for bringing
and setting up the fans.
Mike Head for sound.
Everyone who brought such delicious food for the potluck and everyone
who helped clean up afterward.

HATDS Board Elected
- - By Dorcas Hand
The annual election for the HATDS Board was held at Mayhem (the
May 11 special double dance). Alex Cuclis and June Burton supervised the
election and counted the ballots.
The new Board includes Bill Budell, George Eggleston, Dorcas Hand, Roy
Simmons, and Lauren Singer. The Board thanks Barb Muller for running.
The Board is counting on her continuing to work closely with them all
year. The HATDS Board runs primarily by consensus and prefers to enjoy
the contributions of many active participants.
The Board also thanks Tom van Dyke for his efforts on the Board last
year. He contributed much energy to being sure there would be a dance
manager for each dance.

May 15 Board Meeting
- - By Dorcas Hand
The new Board met May 15 to select officers. Bill Budell will continue
as President; Dorcas Hand is VP, Secretary, and Booking Agent; Roy Simmons
is VP for Publicity; Lauren Singer is Treasurer; George Eggleston is Web
and Database Coordinator. The Board also assigned other jobs. Willie Simmons
continues as Web Master. Glenn Hebert continues to manage the membership
database. Alice Bohlae continues to organize Bayou Bedlam with help from
a growing committee. Julia Land will be newsletter editor. The Dance Manager
Manager will be announced soon.
Lauren Singer will continue to head the hall search committee. Questions
include: What did we think of the Central Presbyterian Fellowship Hall?
What other halls might we know of? If we only sort of like Central Presbyterian,
should we move there for a while as we look further, recognizing that
moving cuts attendance for a few months as folks get used to the new address?
Let Lauren know what you think.
The next Board Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, June 19, at 6:30 p.m.
at the Mucky Duck.
